a) The cylinder increased in length and felt hard or stiff or firm because they were placed in hypotonic solution compared to cytoplasm of pawpaw cell; The cell gained water by osmosis, became turgid hence the tissue became firm and the cylinder increase in size.

b) Use boiled pawpaw cylinder. Since the cells are dead, they will not gain water by osmosis
