Lava from an erupting volcano may flow downhill into a river. As it flows it accumulates at the same time. The lava may therefore fill the river valley. If the lava does not flow afar, it forms a wall of solid lava which may eventually fill up the valley. Water eventually accumulates behind this barrier forms a lake. If the water fills the valley and spills over the barrier, a waterfall forms on the downstream side.
