Solution extends the grikes to form deep holes known as swallow holes. If the holes are vertical and surrounded by surface streams, the streams disappear in them as waterfalls. With continued solution the swallow holes enlarge at the surface to form larger holes known as dolines. When many dolines collapse, they form larger holes known as uvalas. As the dissolving of limestone continues, several uvalas may collapse to form a very large depression in the karst scenery known as a Polje.
