A stalactite is formed through the deposition of drops of water containing calcium carbonate which have seeped through crevices and joints. The calcite is deposited due to evaporation. It may also be deposited when the carbon dioxide in water is released. The drops of calcium bicarbonate crystallize to form hanging finger like pillars from the roof of the cavern
