-The Nandi were a decentralized community.

-The family was the basic political unit. It was headed by a father whose duties concerned managing the internal affairs of the family. They included discipline in the family, distribution of crops and livestock.

-several villages constituted a sub clan, which essentially was an amalgamation of related lineages or families with a common ancestry. Each sub clan was headed by a council of elders or Kokwet. The Kokwet was made up of neighborhood or village heads.
-Several related sub clans formed a clan that was led by clan council of elders.
- Several clans that occupied the same ridge formed a Pororiet or territorial unit which was the highest political unit. The Pororiet was led by senior council of elders who were sub clan representatives. These council sued for peace and declared war.
-the Nandi had warriors who defended the community and raided for expansion and cattle.
-They had an age set system that produced warriors for the community. The age set system was hierarchical and graduation or promotion to a senior age set was after every fifteen years.
-In the 19th century the Nandi adopted aspects of Maasai governance by creating the office of the Orkoiyot who was essentially a religious leader but who yielded a lot of political influence. His office was revered. His duties include blessing the warriors before they went to war.
