Describe the factors influencing glacial erosion

Answers

Faith
The thickness and weight of the ice
Glacial erosion is enhanced when the glacier is thicker and heavier. This is because it exerts weight on the rock debris beneath it making it more effective in scraping the ground by abrasion

Availability of debris
This is the material such as gravel embedded in the ice. It acts as a tool for scrapping and scouring the surface through abrasion. The more the debris in a glacier the more effective it will be in eroding through abrasion

Nature of underlying rock
Glacial erosion is more effective in well jointed and faulted rocks than in rocks with no joints. This is because joints allow the passage of water in the rocks leading to erosion by plucking. Hard rocks are more resistant to erosion by abrasion than soft rocks

Speed of the glacier
A fast moving glacier erodes more. This is because the high velocity gives it more energy hence high erosive power.
