The gases,nitrogen and oxygen are first cooled to liquid state then fractional distillation is done in a fractionating column. Nitrogen gas distils faster since it has a low boiling point of -196°C than oxygen. Oxygen then distils of at -183°C. Through this we obtain pure nitrogen from the mixture.
