Structural formula of ethane-,2-diol(ethylene glycol)
OH- CH2 – CH2- OH

Ethane-1,2 diol has a lower freezing point than all water based liquids. It is thus used as an antifreeze because by lowering the freezing point of water it consequently raises the boiling point of the associative component i.e the component to which the water was bound.
