Sociology is classified as a social science because it uses scientific methods in its investigations, quatitative measures are used to measure social phenomenon such as the use of questionnaire, case study and interviews.
In science actual laboratories are used to observe behaviors of organisms, but human beings cannot be put in laboratories, the environment acts as a laboratories and they can be observed and conclusions drown just as science.
It is also possible to measure social relationships by employing statistical methods or sociametry.
