1. Resentment by the educated elites who were ignored by government and given minor positions.

2. The unpopular Yoruba traditional leaders appointed by the British were not accepted and supported by the locals hence resentment.

3. There were many ethnic languages in Southern Nigeria and this caused linguistic disunity.

4. The people of Southern Nigeria were opposed to forced labor, taxation and oppression.

5. Cultural division among the people of Southern Nigeria. The people had different religions, different languages as well as socio-political systems.
