1. Loss of independence among local rulers to the British. This in turn resulted to resentment.

2. Language barrier between most British administrators and the African leaders and people. This lead to misunderstanding in communication.

3. The newly appointed African chiefs became unpopular among the people as a result of their oppression during labour recruitment and tax collection.

4. Disparities in development. Some local communities were conservative and opposed to radical changes in the traditional way of life.

5. Chiefs and their councils gave more importance to what they understood well, disregarding what was unfamiliar.
