Barchans

Wind blows in one direction for a long time carrying sand. Sand deposition occurs around an obstacle such as vegetation or rock. Accumulation of more sand leads to formation of bigger mound of sand. Wind carry sand forward along the edges of the mound leading to the development of horns, leading to formation of a crescent moon-shaped feature known as barchan.

Seif Dunes

Are formed from chains of barchans where cross winds interrupt prevailing winds. Cross winds carry sand from side to side and this breaks the crescent shape of the barchans leading to longitudinal deposition called seif dunes.
