Lighting is seen when there is thunderstorms as explained below.

Lighting is a flash of light that leads to electric discharge in the atmosphere.

The heating of the ground by solar radiation causes the heating of the atmospheric air.The mass of the warm air reduces and it rises and cools leading to formation of clouds. The size of the cloud is dertermined by the rate of rise of water vapour.
The cloud enlarges due to increased rise of water vapour causing a thunderstorm.
Lightning occurs due to the water vapour on top of the cloud turning into ice,the ice particles collide against each other thus causing discharge of electric current.
Lighting also is as a result of reaction of positive and negative charges of the warmer and colder air masses.
