Factors for the rise of pre-colonial states in Africa
Pre-colonial states had good and able leaders united the people and led the kingdoms to prosperity. This state’s became strong. Some states had monarchs whose leadership was hereditary. Leaders were a symbol of unity among their people.
Some states experienced good climate and had fertile soil. This enabled the states to grow crops which they used to trade and earn revenue. These states had a strong economy based on agriculture. Both food and cash crops like Kola nuts were cultivated. This helped to increase the population.
Some pre-colonial states were strategically positioned for defence. The Baganda for example lay near the lake making it advantageous for her in trade, transport and defence
The states had strong very army which protected them against external attack. Those near the lake had well established navies which provided a strong defence system.
Pre-colonial states had interacted with other states and acquired guns and other weapons which were used in defence against their warring neighbors.
Conquest through war led to their growth
Factors that led to the fall of pre-colonial states
There was rivalry between pre-colonial states. This led to constant rebellions from the conquered states. This intern weakened the states and led to their downfall.
There was several interference in trade roots due to war which intern weakened the financial stability of these states. They lacked items to trade with their neighbors. This led to their downfall.
Colonial masters arrived in Africa and conquer these states. Some states collaborated while others put up resistance but eventually were defeated and became subjects to their colonial masters.
There was also leadership struggle between clans or tribes within the states. This weakened these states because of constant fighting.
