Traditional biotechnology was limited to closely related species. Genetic engineering is useful and applicable to distantly related organisms. One only needs to isolate the gene coding for the trait of interest and transfer it to the organism being improved.

With traditional biotechnology, one had very little choice in the genes being transferred from one organism to another. Using genetic engineering, scientists can transfer specific genes between organisms and leave out unwanted genes.

Traditional biotechnology was really time consuming. This was because one had to wait for a while (duration of the organisms growth and maturity) for the genes transferred to be expressed in the organism. With genetic engineering, time is saved since analysis of the presence of these genes can be done at the young stages of organisms and necessary corrections made.
