Muscles respire anaerobically, resulting in accumulation of lactic acid in the tissue, causing fatigue/ muscle crumps/ pain. Since its toxic, it must be broken down into carbon (IV) oxide and energy therefore extra oxygen must be taken in to oxidize lactic acid
