(a) To remove soluble substances, both toxic/ harmful substances e.g. urea or nitrogenous waste and useful from the blood stream.

(b) To return/ reabsorb useful substances e.g. glucose and Amino acids back into the bloodstream that had been ultra-filtrated leaving only the wastes .
