One catalyst in the formation of the internet was the heating up of the cold war which spurred the U.S. defense department to formulate ways in which information could be disseminated even after nuclear attack.

This led to the formation of ARPANET (advanced research projects network) in 1960 and the network went online in 1969 with a network connection of 56 kbps.

This new technology proved to be reliable and led to the creation of the two similar military networks called MILNET in the U.S. and MINET in Europe.

In 1983, a new communication protocol was established called transfer control protocol / internetwork protocol (TCP/IP) which was the standard way for various computers networks to communicate with each other. This led to the birth of the internet. All networks could now be connected by a universal language.

Many universities and organizations had been connected to the ARPANET which led to traffic congestion. The internet links were upgraded in 1988 to faster T1 (1.544 Mbps) links to ease the congestion.

By 1991, data traffic had increased tremendously, which necessitated upgrading the T1 network service to T3 (45 Mbps) links. It is at this level that the National Research and Education Network (NREN) was founded and the World Wide Web (WWW) was released.

Other internet networks technologies which have been developed to date include: 1G (analogue network), 2G (1st digital network which uses GPRS, EDGE and CDMA), 3G (uses WCDMA, HSPA and HSPA+), 4G (uses LTE and WiMAX)
