If the air hole is closed the flame produced is brighter yellow in colour and called the luminous flame which is cooler and used for lighting. If the collar is adjusted by opening it half way more air mixes with the gas hence the flame becomes hotter and to make the flame fully hot the collar is fully opened to produce the hottest flame known as the non-luminous flame.
