Magnetization is the process of making a magnet from a magnetic material.
Common methods used in magnetization are:
Induction method.
In this method, a material to be magnetized (e.g. a pin) is attached to the magnet; the pin(s) therefore on acquiring its magnetism acquires the magnetic poles.
Stroking method.
Can be achieved in two ways i.e. single stroke or double stroke.
In single stoke, a material to be magnetized for example a steel needle, is stroke by one pole of the magnet from end A to B, as shown below. The process is repeated severally.
Note:
The end of the needle where the magnet finishes stroking acquires an opposite polarity to that of the stroking end of the magnet.
The disadvantage of this method is that it produces magnets in which one pole is nearer the end of the magnetized material than the other.this can be avoided by use of the double stoke method.
In double stroke method, the material e.g. the steel bar is stoke from the Centre repeatedly in opposite direction ,using opposite polarities of two bar magnets P and Q as shown below.
Hammering method.
In this method,a material to be magnetized is placed in the north-south position of the earths and its upper end hammered several times as shown below.
Electrical method.
Is the best and quickest method of magnetization.
Utilizes the magnetic effect on an electric current.
Widely used in industrial production of magnets by use of a solenoid (a coil with many turns of insulated copper wire) and a direct current dc passed through the solenoid as shown below.
Note:
The polarity of the electro-magnet can be identified by use of either of the following rules:
Clock rule. Which states that if, on viewing one end of the bar, and the current flows in clockwise direction, then that end is a south pole.
Right-hand grip rule. It states that if a coil carrying current, ccc is grasped with the right hand such that the fingers points in the direction of current, then the thumb points in the direction of north pole.
