(i) Provides site for exchange of materials i.e/. food nutrients from maternal circulation to the foetus and waste material from circulation to maternal circulation.

(ii) Production of hormones. It takes over from ovaries to produce hormone progesterone

(iii) Acts as a barrier - It selectively allows certain substances to pass. It also prevents mixing of material and foetal blood.

(iv) Serves to protect the foetus by producing amniotic fluid which absorbs shock.
