To be made an elder in African traditional society, there are several factors that were considered
i) An elder should have children. Children were a symbol of wealth and prestige. It was important for an elder to have children.
ii) An elder was supposed to be wealthy. He was to be able to provide for his family and others.
iii) One must be married. Marriage was an important rite in one’s life. An elder was supposed to have married. Polygamy was highly encouraged
iv) An elder was to be knowledgeable in matters of the community. He was considered to be wise and knowledgeable in the community’s history and traditions
v) There was a specific age that was considered for one to be called an elder.
vi) Having a sound mind and good health was also considered
