You need to be nominated to be a candidate for election in a constituency. The nomination needs to be seconded by 10 people, called subscribers. The first two are your proposer and seconder. You need to appoint an election agent and deposit £500 with the returning officer. The deposit is returned if you win 5% or more of the vote in the election. You may stand for a registered political party or as an independent. The method of choosing a party's candidate varies from party to party and may vary from constituency to constituency.

To be entitled to be a candidate you must be a British citizen, a citizen of the Irish Republic or a citizen of any Commonwealth country who does not require leave to remain in the UK.

Certain people are not entitled to be candidates. These include members of the House of Lords, the police, civil servants and members of the armed forces. Any of these people can resign their position in order to be a candidate. Bankrupts may not stand and nor may people with debt relief orders.

It is very rare for independents to win election, so the best way to be elected is to be nominated by a political party in a winnable seat for that party. For instance, you're most unlikely to be elected if you're the Conservative candidate in Kingston-upon-Hull East (it's safe Labour) or if you're the Labour Party Candidate in Surrey Heath (it's safe Conservative).
