When Adika was killed, the person who had killed him came to his grave at night before the shaving ceremony
and placed some silver coins in a wooden bowl on his grave .This he did in order to try to appease the dead.To this ,Doga the father tells his murdered son,'Do not let them tempt you.Follow them to the bitter end. Follow them up the hills and down the valleys. Doga also informs us that Adika is murdered,Jusper becomes wild at the funeral and sings songs of vengeance.
The desire to revenge has brought about the death of Chagaga. He was killed by Jusper who was avenging for his brothers death. Chagaga was the brother to the sub chief who had killed Adika-Jusper's brother by showering him with bullets. Jere tells his parents" people saw him drag the body to the river and when they sent search team there, they sure enough found the body. After Jere tries to plead with Mulili to let the old couple go on with the ceremony and the latter refuses,he becomes greatly affected by Mulili scooping of soil on the grave and imitating a priest's burial liturgy. Jere chases him out of the scene by threatening to shoot him and as Mulili dives for cover he tells Jere,Hey you ,what you thinks you do?You shall pays for it!and in the next scene Jere land in prison.
Later revenge on Chagaga's death is done on Adika's parents who are found dead in their hut. Jusper is imprisoned for the killing but when his parents are later murdered,he is released. He wonders how he can ever rest with death of his entire family on his mind and then says 'I will get my revenge someday even if it means going it alone.
Boss gives orders to avenge for what he thinks Kabito has done depending on what he has been told by Mulili. He orders Mulili to have Kabito silenced in order to punish him for all the allegations mulili heaped on him.It is sad to see an innocent man being killed. Tumbo says that the desire to eliminate others has become infectious.
The final act vengeance is performed by Jusper who shoots Mulili dead. Mulili represents the class of evil men in the society who have hurt so many people. Jusper says,I did it for all of you people.
OR
The play: Betrayal in the City, Francis Imbuga.
'The desire to avenge oneself on perceived enemies adds more evil and suffering in society.' Write an essay to illustrate this
assertion with close reference to the play
Betrayal in the City, Francis Imbuga:
Introduction:
It is a human instinct to pay back evil with evil - an eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth. It is bad to do so and can only be forestalled when people value peaceful coexistence and chastity of life as they have second thoughts and respect for peace. However, bad leadership can instigate hate and distract amongst citizens or family members leading to a desire to hurt as sun in the play.
(Accept any other relevant introduction = 2 marks)
Body and content
i) Kafira is ruled by a tyrant - police use excessive force against rioting university students and gun
down Adika, Jusper's brother in the university. Jusper avenges his brother's blood by killing Chagaga - the sub-chief?s brother - believed to have pulled the trigger on
Adika.
- Jusper drowns the body in a river. The public stones Jusper when, feigning madness, he confesses his crime.
? All these happenings are due to bad governance.
ii) Jusper?s suffering and loss go spiral - deaths of his brothers, parents, his arrest, that of Mosese and the attempted rape on his girlfriend Regina by the boss, among other evils; The opportunity to avenge himself presents itself in the tender to write the play to entertain the visiting foreign head of state to be performed by prisoners - no wonder the hitherto adamant Mosese and Jere agree to take part in the performance. It appears lack of props and the sick prisoner whose role the boss chooses to undertake are a ploy by Jusper in a bid to have Boss in the cast and also use live ammunition to nail the Boss. The government is defenselessly toppled by gun-wielding prisoners and Mulili is killed.
iii) Mulili is involved in a tussle with Kabito, a cabinet member, for the tender to supply milk to the university.
- Kabito is qualified for the tender by varsity authorities but Mulili uses Boss to have the tender given to him.
- At a committee meeting to plan on the visiting foreign head of state, the two quarrel over an irrelevant matter and Mulili
claims Kabito has insulted him. During break, Mulili falsely accuses Kabito to Boss who orders Mulili to report Kabito silenced. During the same break, Kabito is involved in a ghastly road accident and he dies. -Mulili avenges himself against Kabito over the tender saga.
iv) Mulili avenges himself against Jere after they differ when sent by Boss to stop the shaving ceremony on Adika's grave. It is Jere's home area; he respects Doga as his father's agemate so he wishes they let the ceremony go on as planned - Mulili would hear none of it as he claims he has been promised a farm and, many head of cattle' by Boss and would not lose them owing to the ceremony. Jere wishes they strike a deal akin to another in which Mulili let a fugitive Mustafa ,flee.
- Jere is irked and in the exchange of words attempts to shoot Mulili who threatens him hence; 'Hey you, what you thinks you do? You shall pays for it! (pg 15) Next time we meet Jere, he is in prison which can only be due to Mulili's revenge.
v) Doga and Nina bitterly argue with Mulili over their right to conduct a shaving ceremony on their son's grave. Mulili is disrespectful of old age as he dares Nina to strip naked saying:'
'How many naked body I have seen and I am still Mulili with my two eyes, natural? Look, no glass goggles.” (pg 9) The old couple curses mulili:
DOGA: Let's forget he ever was born…..'Pg 9)
Empty words will be your downfall.
May you die the way Adika did.' (pg 70) The old couple is bitter with the government and Mulili for mistreatment.
-
In revenge, Mulili has the old couple murdered and cursed by Doga and Nina, he is in return gunned down during the final
rehearsal - all these owing to bad governance.
Conclusion
It is wrong to repay evil with evil. A peaceful coexistence among citizens is the key to progress and joy. Even with poor leadership, the people can forge a common front and fight against the regime and restore democracy. Forgiveness is the
anecdote for restoration of brotherly love and hence peace
