Conflict is a disagreement between between two people or groups who hold different ideas or opinions. It is a form of discord or friction arising within arising within a group especially when the members do not agree.Ole Kulet has brought out several conflicts in the novel many of which are as a result of differing views concerning some cultural practices.
There is a major conflict between those who support female circumcision and those opposed to it. Minik ene Nkoitoi, the Emakererei,is the leader of anti F.G.M campaign which causes conflict between her and the people of Nasila, especially the elders. As the old man is carrying out the ceremony for Ole Kaelo,he asks Taiyo and Resian not to listen to crusaders of that culture.
There is a conflict between Emakarerei with Ole Supeyo. Ole Kaelo remembers how he had once witnessed his friend Ole Supeyo's incense. This anger was provoked by one Minik ene Nkitoi, the Emekererei, when she came to persuade him not to circumcise his daughters. We are told that Supeyo got so angry when she insisted and he forcefully ejected her, threatening to clobber her. This conflict made Supeyo refer to as a wasp claiming that she was a great threat to the Maa culture.
We also see conflict between Oloisuduri and the Emakererei when he goes to her ranch to demand to be given either Resian or Taiyo. Oloisudori interrupts the farewell party and is confronted by Emakererei who asks him to leave her ranch immediately. When he insists on taking Resian or Taiyo with him. Emakererei tells him that the two are under their charge and none of them would be taken away from her. This angers Oloisudori who ends up calling her a mendacious spinster. When he tries to force his way,the workers of the ranch attack of the ranch attack him and his men and reduce his convoy to smoldering shells and acrid smell of burning tyres.
Resian conflicts with her father on several occasions. Ever since her birth,Resian is hated by her father Ole Kaelo who wanted a son instead of a daughter. He thus takes every opportunity to attack her even when she has not done anything wrong. The height of their conflicts comes when Resian confronts him about his intention to marry her off to Oloisuduri. The confrontation is so serious to the extend that Ole Kaelo ends up slapping Resian twice for talking back to him. This conflict makes Resian run away from home as she is not ready to marry the monster the monster Oloisuduri.
Despite Taiyo and Resian being so close, they at one time have a disagreement over being coached by Joseph Parmut as proposed by their father. While Taiyo is excited, artesian is against the whole idea. She feels that she needs to be taught what is universally accepted which will only be at the university. Her opposition is however grounded on the fear of losing Taiyo to him
There is a conflict within Joseph Parmuat. He had fallen in love with Taiyo but due to the expectations of the culture he ascribes to,he is forced to decline the love .He goes through a lot of conflict within himself .Even though a lot of conflict within himself.Even though he had promised her that he would be ready for any eventuality earlier on,we later him changing his mind after a lot of soul searching. He wonders whether he should abandon his culture in exchange of a woman. He however knows that Taiyo is not just any woman woman. He however knows that Taiyo is just any any woman. This dilemma causes him conflict but ultimately he declined her love. The the two men tried to rape Resian and Taiyo are identified as member's of Ilukumae clan.It was said that the Ilukumae clan had a grudge the Ilmolelian clan men thus making the actions of the two to be associated with this grudge. This conflict makes the Ilmolelian clan men look for the two with the desire to prove to the Ilukumae clan that they were no cowards.
