(a) Advantages of an Expert System.
(i) Fast response.
They can respond at great speed due to the inherent advantages of computers over humans.

(ii) Unemotional and response at all times.
Unlike humans, they do not get tense, fatigue or panic and work steadily during emergency situations.

(iii) Availability.
Expert systems are available easily due to mass production software allowing duplication.

(iv) Cheaper.
The cost of providing expertise is not expensive.

(v) Reduced danger.
They can be used in any risky environments where humans cannot work in.

(vi) Permanence.
The knowledge will last long indefinitely.

(vii) Multiple expertise.
It can be designed to have knowledge of many experts.

(viii) Explanation.
They are capable of explaining in details the reasoning that leads to any conclusion.

Disadvantages of Expert system.
(i) Lack of meta-knowledge.
Expert system do not have very sophisticated knowledge about their own operation.
They typically cannot reason about their own scope and limitations, making it even more difficult to deal with the bitterness problem.

(ii) Knowledge Acquisition.
Knowledge Acquisition still remains a major bottleneck in applying Expert System technology to new domains.

(iii) Validation.
Measuring the performance of an expert system is difficult because we do not know how to quantify the use of knowledge.

(iv) They are expensive.

(v) The technology of the Expert System is still at its infancy.

(vi) People are becoming naturally creative hence no need to implement the system.

(vii) It is difficult to develop the system.

(viii) Brittleness (weakers/ rigid).
Because Expert Systems have only access to highly specific domain knowledge, they cannot fall back on mere general knowledge when the need arises.
