Air is passed through the electrostatic precipitation chamber where the dust particles are absorbed. The dust free air is then passed through concentrated potassium hydroxide to remove carbon(iv) oxide. The remaining air is cooled to a temperature of -25 °C where water vapour is separated out as ice.The air which is now composed of oxygen, argon and nitrogen is condensed to a temperature of -200°C and subjected to a pressure of 200 atm to liquify it.The liquid air is then taken through the fractionating column where nitrogen is collected first at a temperature of -196°C.
