A graben is a valley with a clear escarpment on each side caused by the displacement of a piece of land in a downward manner.

Graben are created from parallel faults on a mass of land in a case where there is downward movement of a hanging wall and upward movement of a footwall. The faults typically slopes as if toward the center of the graben on either side. Horsts will be the parallel masses of land left between the graben. One or more graben form a rift valley.
