(i) Which of the compounds is a solid at 10.0 o C? Explain.
(ii) Choose two compounds which are members of the same homologous series and explain the difference in their melting points.
(iii) The compound C3H8O is an alcohol. How does its solubility in water differ from the solubility of C5H12 in water? Explain.

Answers

John
(i) C2H4O2. This is because its melting point (M.P.) is higher than 10o C.

(ii) $C_5H_{12}$ and $C_6H_{14}$

$C_6H_{14}$ has a higher M.P since it's a bigger molecule therefore has stronger Van der waal's forces.

(iii) $C_3H_8O$ is more soluble in water than C$_5H_{12}$ because it forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules
