. Insufficient rainfall of less that 250mm annually which cannot support the growth of
vegetation.
. High temperature which lead to high evaporation rates that exceeds the rate of precipitation.
. Cold ocean currents in regions where onshore winds cross over cold ocean currents. The wind
drop their moisture over the sea, hence get to the land as dry winds.
. Continentality/distance from the sea.Places located in the interior of the continents do not
experience the effects of onshore moist winds hence are arid.
. Wind systems. If the prevailing winds in a region are ,they cause a drying effect on the land
hence aridity.
. Pressure systems since regions of the world that frequently experience anticyclones and the
accompanying descending air currents receive very little rainfall.
. Relief barriers as some areas become arid because they are on the leeward side of the
mountain ranges that receive very little rainfall.A good example is the Patagonian desert on
the leeward side of Andes Mountains.
