After J.J Thomson, Rutherfold carried out an experiment by directing alpha particles on a thin gold plate placed between the alpha particles source and a screen.

His main aim was to proof if the J.J Thomson`s model of plum pudding would explain something so he expected all alpha particles to penetrate the thin gold plate.

Result:

1.Most of the alpha particles penetrated the thin gold plate

2.A third of alpha particles penetrated but deviated at different angles

3.A few of alpha particles were not able to penetrate but bounce back

Conclusions:
Rutherford concluded that most particles passed through because the atom is mostly empty space.

All of the positive charge, and most of the mass of an atom are concentrated in a small core, called the nucleus.
