• Presentation of the candidate – the candidate is presented to the bishop
who explains in his homily the role of a priest. He then proceeds to ask
the candidate a series of questions about the role he is to fulfi l.
• There is a litany of saints asking their prayers for the candidate.
• The actual ordination now takes place with the bishop laying his hands
on the head of the candidate who kneels down. The bishop says a
prayer while participating priests stand in a semi-circle around the
candidate.
• The investiture and prostration – the stole is placed around the neck of
the priest and he puts on his mass vestments for the fi rst time.
• Anointing of hands – the bishop anoints the priests hand with chrism
and he prays that the priest will persevere in all his duties.
• Presentation of gifts – the bishop gives the priests the gifts which were
brought up during the offertory procession. The priest will consecrate
the bread and wine for the fi rst time.
• Sign of peace – the ceremony ends with the bishop offering the sign of
peace to the new priest.
• Final blessing.
