• He emphasised the need for personal repentance and that salvation was a personal matter.
• He challenged the religious leaders who thought that because they were descendants of Abraham their Jewish ancestry assured them place in the Kingdom of God. Their place in the kingdom was not guaranteed.
• He called the religious leaders snakes and told them that they would not be exempt from punishment. They were like trees which would be cut down and thrown into a fire.
• He warned people that their lives needed to show godly living.
• He made clear that he was preparing the way for the long awaited Messiah and he was challenging the people to be ready for this.
