• He used these everyday items because they were relevant to his audience.
• To explain what was required of those who followed him and how they should lead their lives.
• Just as a city needs to be lit up at night or a lamp put on a stand to light up a room in a house so the faith, witness and daily living should shine out in the world as an example to other people. If they did not set a good example they would be like a light hidden under a bowl.
• Just as salt was used to preserve some foodstuffs or add flavour to a meal so his followers through their commitment to God and through setting an example should never lose the impact for good that they can have on other people. They are not to lose their loyalty to God or they will be ineffective just as salt does if it loses it saltiness.
• True discipleship is not just about words of belief but a call to a practical faith.
