(i) Organically formed sedimentary rocks are formed when remains of previously existing animals or plants are accumulated over a period of time forming layers. These layers are compressed and compacted to form rocks.

(ii) Chemically formed sedimentary rocks are formed when solutions of salt evaporate or when rocks are precipitated and particles accumulate in layers. With time the above particles accumulate and compressed to form rocks.

(iii) Mechanically formed sedimentary rocks are formed through erosion of rock materials. The rock materials are transported by agents of erosion and deposited in layers either on land or in the sea.
