(i) Water that is free from sediments because silt interferes with their ability to gather food.

(ii) Enough light in the water for the growth of plankton which is the food for polyps.

(iii) Saline water from which the polyps extract lime to construct their skeletons.

(iv) Warm water at 20o to 30o temperatures,in order for them to survive.

(v) Well oxygenated water for them to grow fast.
