(i) State the purpose of the lead shots in the glass bulb.
(ii) How would the hydrometer be made more sensitive?
(iii) Describe how the hydrometer is calibrated to measure relative density.

Answers

John
(i) To enable the hydrometer float upright

(ii)
? The stem is thin. This makes the hydrometer sensitive such that a small change in density of
liquid causes a large change on the stem.
? The bulb is large to make it float.
The bulb is heavy to make it float a upright.

(iii) Float the hydrometer on water and on a liquid of known density in turn. Mark the levels and divide proportionally the range between two levels and extend on either side.
