Figure 8 shows a stone of mass 4.0 kg increased in water and suspended from a spring balance with a string. The beaker was placed on a compression balance whose reading was 85 N. The density of the stone was 3000 kgm-3 while the density of the liquid was 800 kgm -3.

Determine the;
(a) volume of the liquid displaced;
(b) upthrust on the stone;
(c) Reading of the spring balance;

Answers

John
(a) Volume = $\frac{mass}{density}$ = $\frac{4}{3000}$ = 1.33 x 10 -3 m3

(b) Upthrust = weight of liquid displaced

mass of liquid displaced = 1.33 x 10 -3 x 800 = 1.064 kg

Weight of liquid displaced = mg = 1.064 x 10 = 10.64 N

(c) 40 - 10.64 = 29.36 N
