The process is effective in regions experiencing a definite wet and dry regions. It is common in rocks containing clay. The clay absorbs moisture when it rains which makes it increase in size. When the dry season comes, the particles loose the water, making them shrink. The alternate swelling and shrinking make the particles to detach themselves, falling away. The rocks thus disintegrate.
