In the classroom, the teacher plays certain assigned roles such as
a)Evaluator: judge of the academic performance of the learners as well as whether the teaching is being done in the right manner , whether materials fro learning are adequate for the learners level of schooling,
b) Disciplinarian: is the source of authority to ensure that there is adherence and obedience to the rules and regulations. In this the teacher determines the reward and punishment for those learners who obey on one hand and those who happen to do what the rules and regulations have not prescribed. By so doing the teacher is a modifier of learners behaviours and a change agent
c)Group leader: is entrusted with the guiding the classroom group, directing the learners in their various activities, managing and organising other activities that will result in getting the classroom work well done. In this group, leadership capacity, is also a motivator, inspiring, urging, and encouraging his or her group of learners to keep charging ahead in their academic work d)Mediator/conciliator: he or she is a consensus agent whenever the learners disagree , tries to reconcile the differences, bring them to an agreement through dialogue making the decision and judgement that would be acceptable to all the parties/ Teachers are supposed to be peace keepers among students. In the case of conflicts (key have the role of ensuring disputants are committed to the mediation process. They should ensure that disputants are committed to the mediation process and are ready to negotiate in good faith, and solve the problem. However, at times the teacher I is the cause of class conflicts. This is through student favoritism. Some teachers have their "ears' and 'Eyes' among students. This tends to create antagonism in class
e)Parent surrogate: he or she is entrusted with taking care of the learners welfare in the absence of the biological parents during the time that the learners are in school.
f)Guidance: A pupil learns many things at school. Besides the subject areas one is expected to be prepared socially, morally and emotionally for society. It is one of the functions of the teacher to guide the pupils to be good adult members of society. Teaches learners to keep time. Late comers are punished to prevent this habit. Those with pi in their academic work are advised by teachers on how to improve. Students emotional problems are advised and helped by teachers: he or she aims at changing the behaviour of the learners their personal attitudes, views and approaches in life by counselling them advising them and listening to their agonies whenever they confide in him or her
g)Administrative function :Every teacher is an administrator. The teacher manages the learning process as well as all the learning resources in the classroom. For the teacher to succeed in teaching tasks he has to be skillful at the management of learning. It should be an orderly arrangement, grading and ordering the material to be learnt. The teacher also has to manage the pupils. This he does by providing the pupil with an environment that promotes learning. The pupils have to be orderly, so the sitting arrangement has to be well ordered to permit easy movement. The teacher has to manage equipment like tables, desks and chairs, chalkboard. The teacher at times assists the principal in the overall administration of the school by performing specific assignments. At the secondary school level, subject teacher are sometimes house masters, positions which combine administrative and guidance functions
h) Socializer: The teacher is a mediator between a student and the curriculum. He socializes the learners in the accepted norms and skills which have been laid down by society. The way the teacher mediates with the student has an influence on their future roles.
