Growth and development takes a cephalocaudal pattern, one in which growth and development proceeds from the head downwards to the organs which are furthest away from the head.
The first week after birth, the infant has a relatively good control of the head unlike when it is born.
By 4th wk, if child is put on its stomach on a flat surface it is capable of raising its chest up. Muscles are able to control weight of the head and chest.
By 3 months, the child can sit with slight support. Sitting requires control of the whole trunk (head to buttocks).
By 7-8mths, the infant can stand with support. The hind limbs/legs have grown in size and are strong enough, well coordinated and can support the weight of the child.
By 9 months, the child takes the 1st step. By 12-15 months, the child can attempt to run.
