Formation of an ox bow lake

In the lower course of a river, the river moves sluggishly. On meeting an obstacle, the river moves round it instead of cutting through it. This leads to the formation of meanders. Water moves faster on the concave slope hence causing intense erosion. On the convex slope, water moves slowly causing deposition. Alternate erosion and deposition causes the meanders to be pronounced and the distance between two concave allows is reduced. The river then cuts a new channel leaving the meander to form an ox bow lake.
