The phrase in the literal meaning can best be described that whatever a person deserves will in the long run despite all the shortcomings that they face, they will end up getting what was meant for them. this can best be seen in the story as illustrated below.
Grusha when she took away the baby Michael and protected him like he was her own child. The mother of this child wanted to kill him so that she could take all the property after the death of the King. Grusha because she was selfless could not have allowed this to happen to the baby Michael. on the other hand, Michael's mother when King Azdak was making the decision about who the real mother of the child was after Grusha failed to tug on the baby he concluded that he was actually her son. she deserved him for she had suffered protecting him when in the forest. Azdak ruled in favor of the poor.

The valley was given to the waterers for they deserved it so that it could bear fruit.

The land that was belonged to the king was given to baby Michael.

In conclusion, the phrase is true from the play The Caucasian Chalk Circle from the instances stated above.
