Let the number be x.

$\frac{2}{3}x\;-\;\frac{3}{5}x$ = 40

$\frac{10x\;-\;9x}{15}$ = 40

$\frac{x}{15}$ = 40

x = 15 x 40;

x = 600

The number is 600
