What are the factors determining the rate of coastal erosion?

Give the factors that determine the rate of coastal erosion.

Answers

Maurice
(i) Nature or supply of material: heavy materials or boulders have a higher erosive power than fine materials.

(ii) Nature or strength of the destructive waves: strong waves will cause greater erosion by hydraulic action and erosion process.

(iii) Duration of exposure of the coast to wave erosion: the longer the exposure to the coastal waves, the higher the rate of erosion.

(iv) Degree of exposure of the coast to wave erosion: the exposed coasts are eroded more than the sheltered coasts that are sheltered hence reducing the rate of erosion.

(v) Nature or structure of the coastal rock: A coast made up of soft rocks wears away easily when subjected to sea waves or when rocks are well jointed or have fractures or are easily eroded.
