where x = 1, y = 1 and when x = 3, y = -1. Find the values of m and c.

Substitute the values in

y = mx + c to have

m + c = 1 ....... (i)

3m + c = -1 ............(ii)

Subtract (ii) from (i)

-2m = 2;

m =-a

but m + c = 1

-1 + c = 1;

c = 2
