Let 2x = a and 3y = b

a + b = 59 .....(i)

8a - 9b = 13 .... (ii)

Multiply eqn (i) by 8

8a + 8b = 472
-8a - 9b = 13 -

17b = 459

a + 27 = 59

a = 32

b = 27

but 2x = a

2x=32

If bases are equal the powers are

also equal hence x = 5

3y=b - 3y=27

3y=33 = y = 3
