Let $2^x$ = a and $3^y$ = b

a + b = 59 .....(i)

8a - 9b = 13 .... (ii)

Multiply eqn (i) by 8

8a + 8b = 472
-8a - 9b = 13 -

17b = 459

a + 27 = 59

a = 32

b = 27

but $2^x$ = a

$2^x = 32$

If bases are equal the powers are

also equal hence x = 5

$3^y=b$ - $3^y=27$

$3^y = 3^3$ = y = 3
