Wanjala broke three beakers and four test tubes while Kamau broke two beakers and five test tubes during practical lessons in the lab. If Wanjala was charged Ksh. 560 and Kamau Ksh. 490 for the breakages, find the cost of each beaker and test tube.

Let the cost of a beaker be x and

a testube be y

2x + 5y = 490 .... (i)

3x + 4y = 560 ..... (ii)

Multiply eqn (i) by 2 and eqn (ii) by 3

6x + 15y = 1 470

-6x + 8y = 1 120 - taken away

7y = 350

y = sh 50

Using 2x + 5y = 490;

2x + 250 = 490;

2x = 240

x = sh 120

The cost of 1 beaker is sh 120

and 1 testtube is sh 50
