In any given society,the elites are expected to play a major role of helping the state flee from social vices and hence save it from poor leadership and governance.Kafira in Francis Imbuga's Betrayal in the City is also a state with elites who contribute to its salvage as we see at the end of the play.It is with no doubt that they do face challenges and some of them even lose their lives in the process.The elites of Kafira include Jusper Wendo,Adika,Jere,Mosese and the university students.
Jusper Wendo is one character who is actively involved in ousting the oppresive regime witnessed in Kafira.He is a fearless and courageous man who does not fear the government and tells things as they are.He confesses to have killed Chagaga,the sub-chief's brother in revenge for Adika's death.Jusper is also the one who writes the controversial play to be acted by prisoners for the purpose of overthrowing the government and removing the evil element in it who is Mulili.In the end ,Jusper shoots Mulili and says he did it for Kafira.(page 74)
Adika,Jusper's brother leads the university students in a strike against the influx of expatriates in Kafira.They try to show their dissatisfaction on how the expatriates have dominated the country and as a result,the citizens who fought for independence remain unemployed.However,Adika dies during the strike.He is shot four times by a kinsman to the sub-chief.Adika's death causes Jusper to be mentally disturbed and propels him to fight for justice.Together with other university students,they demand that Adika's potraits be printed in the press as a sign of honouring his death.
Mosese,a former university lecture criticizes the government's way of ruling during Adika's funeral.He is against the oppression of the citizens by the government.Due to his statements at the funeral,a plot is made and eight kilograms of opium is planted in his car.He is falsely accused and arrested.Mosese highlights the plight of elites in Kafira.He is also very principled.This is witnessed when he changes his name from Nicodemo to Mosese because the government official who planted opium in his car was called Nicodemo.He also refuses to take part in the play written by Jusper but later accepts.
Jere is an ex-soldier and a colleague to Mulili.He taught religion for three years before joining the army.Jere is very reasonable and tries to reason with Mulili to let Doga and Nina to conduct the ceremony.This lands him in trouble and he ends up in jail where he meets Mosese. He is unpertubed by threats directed to him by Askari when Askari says he has killed a man once in that very cell(Page 30).
He also plays a role in the staged palace coup to help liberate Kafira of poor leadership.
Educated people in a country aid in preventing total decay of the society.They act as the sounds that awaken a sleeping nation.In the play, it is the efforts and unity of educated people that help unravel the enemy of both the government and the people.Boss learns his lesson and Mulili who is the mastermind of Kafira's misery is shot dead.Hope is restored for Kafira and they are ready to start all over again.In the words of Jere when he does not kill Boss,he says"No, your excellency, we shall not shoot you ,Kafira needs each one of us,you included".

THE TEARS OF A SLAVE
Adieu, to my native shore,
To toss on the boisterous wave;
To enjoy my kindred no more,
But to weep – the tears of a SLAVE!
By the sons of freemen I’m borne,
To the land of the free and the brave;
From my wife and children I’m torn,
To weep – the tears of a SLAVE!
When, I think on mother and friends,
And the joy their countenance gave;
Ah! How my sad bosom it rends,
While weeping – the tears of a SLAVE!
Ah! Now, I must labour for gold,
To pamper the pride of the knave;
Ah! Now, I am shackled and sold
To weep – the tears of a SLAVE!
Keen sorrow so presses my heart,
That often I sigh for my grave;
While feeling the lash-cruel smart!
And weeping – the tears of a SLAVE!
Ye sons, of the free and wise,
Your tender compassion I crave;
Alas! can your bosoms despise
The pitiful tears of a SLAVE!
Can a land of Christians so pure!
Let demons of slavery rave!
Can the angel of mercy endure,
The pitiless – tears of a SLAVE!
Just heaven, to thee I appeal;
Hast thou not the power to save?
In mercy the power reveal,
