-Infiltration rates: If the infiltration rate is high the basin must be small in order to reduce filling time. If infiltration rate is low then the banks must be high.
-Water supply rates: The water supply rate must be higher than the total infiltration rate of the basin otherwise the basin will never get flooded. If the inflow is low and infiltration rate is high then the basin should be small. If inflow is high and infiltration rate is low then the size of the basin can be large.
-Slope: Slopes should be low and preferably below 0.2 percent. The higher the slope the more expensive the construction costs and the smaller the basin size.
-Filling time

-Moisture retention capacity
